Bulgária realiza oitava eleição parlamentar em cinco anos sob instabilidade política

On Sunday, Bulgaria conducted its eighth parliamentary election in five years, reflecting the country’s ongoing political instability. The voting commenced at 1 AM Brasília time (7 AM local time) and saw former President Rumen Radev as the leading candidate according to exit polls. Radev, known for his pro-Russia stance, campaigned on promises to end the cycle of short-lived governments and tackle widespread corruption.

Rumen Radev, who previously served as a fighter pilot and is skeptical of European integration, resigned from the presidency in January to participate in the elections. His campaign, bolstered by a strong social media presence and substantial financial backing, resonated with a population weary of frequent elections and entrenched political corruption. Radev’s opposition to military support for Ukraine against Russia further defines his political stance.

The election follows mass protests that led to the fall of the previous government in December. These demonstrations were sparked by a proposed budget that included tax hikes and increased social security contributions. The cost of living remains a significant issue for Bulgaria, a member of both the European Union and NATO, which adopted the euro in January. Voters are particularly concerned about economic stability and governance.
