The 44-year-old singer was taken into custody by California Highway Patrol officers on March 5, following reports of erratic driving on U.S. Highway 101 in Ventura County. Spears was subjected to sobriety tests and subsequently detained for allegedly operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs. She was released from custody a few hours later.
The incident occurred near the border of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, where Spears resides. According to police reports, her BMW was seen speeding and weaving through traffic, prompting law enforcement to intervene. The case was forwarded to the Ventura County District Attorney’s office on March 23, with a decision on potential charges expected before a scheduled court hearing on May 4.
A representative for Spears described her actions as “completely unjustifiable,” suggesting that this incident might serve as a catalyst for significant changes in her life. Despite her past success, Spears has stepped back from her music career, having not toured in nearly eight years or released an album in almost a decade. In 2021, she regained control over her personal and financial decisions after a 14-year conservatorship ended. Two years later, she published a bestselling memoir, “The Woman in Me.”
