Recent studies have highlighted the prolonged effects of antibiotics on the gut microbiome, revealing potential health risks. Antibiotics, known to disrupt the balance of intestinal microorganisms, have been linked to increased risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and colorectal polyps. Despite the known immediate impacts, the long-term consequences have been less explored until now.

A study conducted in March examined data from nearly 15,000 adults, with approximately 70% having used antibiotics in the past eight years. The research found that even a single antibiotic course taken four to eight years prior could reduce microbial diversity compared to those who hadn’t used antibiotics. This suggests that antibiotics can have lasting effects on gut health.

Researchers analyzed fecal metagenomes from 14,979 participants, sequencing all DNA in the samples to map the present microorganisms. The findings indicated that the impact of oral antibiotics could persist for nearly a decade. Previous studies had already noted significant changes in the gut microbiome shortly after starting antibiotic treatment, including increased presence of potential pathogens like Escherichia coli, enhanced antimicrobial resistance genes, and higher infection risks.

Long-term and frequent antibiotic use has been associated with heightened risks of various health conditions due to disruptions in the gut microbiome. Specific antibiotic classes can permanently alter the intestinal ecosystem, underscoring the importance of careful and precise medical prescriptions.
