Família de agricultor recebe água encanada após poço apresentar substância escura no CE

In 2024, Sidrônio Moreira, a farmer from Tabuleiro do Norte, Ceará, drilled a well in his backyard hoping to find water but instead discovered a substance resembling oil. This unexpected find has since led to the installation of a new water supply system, which is currently in testing and aims to benefit approximately 700 families in the area.

Sidrônio Moreira’s initial goal was to address the lack of piped water at his home in Sítio Santo Estevão. During the drilling process, a dark, viscous liquid with a fuel-like odor emerged, which later raised suspicions of being oil. The family is awaiting a report from the National Agency of Petroleum (ANP) to confirm the substance’s identity, although no timeline for this analysis has been provided.

The new water pipeline, although not fully operational, has already started supplying water to Sidrônio’s household, providing much-needed relief from the region’s persistent water scarcity. Sidrônio expressed his gratitude, noting the improvement in their living conditions. The system, once fully functional, is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for many families in the drought-prone area.

According to the ANP, even if the substance is confirmed as oil, Sidrônio will not own it due to federal laws granting ownership of subsoil resources to the Union. However, if commercial extraction becomes feasible, he may receive a financial return, potentially up to 1% of the profits, depending on various factors. This compensation could provide additional income for the family, who currently rely on agriculture and livestock for their livelihood.

The Moreira family, including Sidrônio’s son, Sidnei, emphasized that their primary concern was always to secure a reliable water source. The potential oil discovery was unexpected, and while it could offer financial benefits, their focus remains on resolving the water shortage. The family continues to depend on water trucks for supply, highlighting the ongoing challenges they face.

The ANP’s assessment will determine the viability of oil extraction in the area. Similar discoveries in the past have often been deemed too small for commercial development. The outcome of this evaluation will dictate whether Sidrônio’s find can be monetized, offering a possible economic boost to the family and the local community.
