Poland Temporarily Closes Airports and Mobilizes Military After Russian Attacks in Ukraine

In response to recent Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Poland has temporarily halted operations at two airports and activated its military aviation. This precautionary measure, announced on February 7, 2026, aims to ensure the safety of Polish airspace amidst the escalating conflict.

The Polish Armed Forces’ Operational Command has confirmed that military aircraft are now patrolling the nation’s skies as a preventive action. Consequently, flights at Rzeszow and Lublin airports, both located near the Ukrainian border, have been suspended to facilitate military operations. Notably, Rzeszow serves as a crucial NATO logistics hub for supplying arms to Ukraine.

The recent Russian offensive targeted Ukraine’s power grid, prompting the Ukrainian government to implement emergency power cuts across several regions. Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal reported that the attacks severely damaged electricity generation and distribution facilities. He assured that repair teams are on standby to restore services once conditions are safe.

During the flight suspensions, NATO aircraft were observed in the region, according to FlightRadar24. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) noted that the closures were due to military activities related to Polish state security. A similar situation occurred last month, with Polish authorities describing it as a routine procedure without direct threats to national airspace.
