The Mangueira samba school is set to captivate audiences in the 2026 Carnival with an innovative theme that explores the Afro-Amazonian heritage, focusing on the influential figure of Mestre Sacaca. This narrative aims to broaden the common perception of the Amazon, which is often limited to its forest and indigenous populations, by emphasizing the historical presence and contributions of Black communities in the region.
The theme, titled “Amazônia Negra,” seeks to reveal a multifaceted Amazon shaped by the interactions between indigenous and Black cultures. This cultural tapestry is woven through oral traditions, healing practices, rituals, and daily connections with the land. The Mangueira school intends to challenge the notion that the Amazon is solely a natural landscape by highlighting its urban vibrancy and cultural richness.
At the heart of this theme is Mestre Sacaca, a revered cultural and political figure known for his deep knowledge of traditional healing and his role in promoting cultural continuity. Sacaca’s legacy includes his involvement in founding the União dos Negros do Amapá, advocating for the recognition and visibility of Black and indigenous identities in the region. His story will be symbolically represented by the enchanted figure of Xamã Babalaô during the parade.
The parade will spotlight cultural expressions such as marabaixo, batuque, and popular festivities as key elements of collective memory and identity. These cultural practices are seen as vital spaces for historical continuity. According to Sthefanye Paes, a researcher with the school, the parade serves an educational purpose by expanding the understanding of the Amazon as a living, diverse territory. It invites reflection on the stories that remain untold about the Amazon, emphasizing the importance of memory, community, and resistance in preserving the cultural heritage of Black and indigenous peoples.
