Surto de Hantavirose em Navio Britânico Eleva Número de Casos e Mortes

In a recent development, the UK government has confirmed that two more British nationals have contracted hantavirus aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, with a third case under investigation on Tristan da Cunha island. The outbreak has resulted in three fatalities, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has verified five hantavirus cases, with additional cases being examined.

The UK Health Security Agency, along with the Ministry of Health and Foreign Affairs, announced that none of the infected British citizens are currently symptomatic, although they remain under observation. Initially, a 69-year-old British passenger was identified as the first confirmed case and was hospitalized in Johannesburg, South Africa. The ship is en route to the Canary Islands, Spain, where passengers will undergo quarantine before repatriation.

British authorities are organizing a government-funded charter flight to repatriate asymptomatic passengers and crew. Health experts will accompany the flight to ensure compliance with health protocols. Upon return, all individuals will be required to observe a 45-day isolation period in the UK. Efforts are underway to trace and advise those who had contact with confirmed cases to self-isolate.

Suspected hantavirus cases have also emerged in France, the Netherlands, and Singapore among individuals not aboard the MV Hondius. Authorities suggest a possible link to a flight from Johannesburg. The cruise, operated by Dutch company Oceanwide Expeditions, initially departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, and was scheduled to conclude in Cape Verde.

The first fatality occurred on April 11, with symptoms appearing on April 6. The deceased’s wife, who disembarked at Saint Helena, also succumbed to the virus after developing symptoms during a flight to Johannesburg. A third victim, a German woman, died on May 2 after falling ill on April 28. Another British passenger, who sought medical help on April 24, is currently in intensive care in South Africa.

The disembarkation of passengers at Saint Helena, including a widow who left with her deceased husband, raises public health concerns. The WHO has listed countries whose citizens disembarked, including Canada, Denmark, Germany, and others. Authorities are working to track the whereabouts of these passengers to prevent further spread.
