Preserving Natural Teeth and Diverse Exercise Linked to Longer Independence in Old Age

Recent research highlights the significant role of dental health in maintaining independence as we age. A study conducted by the National Dental Center Singapore and Duke-NUS Medical School, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, examined over 3,000 individuals above 60 years old. The findings suggest a strong correlation between retaining natural teeth and an enhanced quality of life.

Older adults who retained between 20 to 32 of their natural teeth experienced notably longer periods of independent living. For those at the age of 60, this translated into over five additional years of autonomy in daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and walking. Although the benefits decrease with age, they remain significant even into the 70s and 80s. Researchers emphasized that oral health is integral to overall aging, affecting physical function, independence, and other health indicators. While dentures can mitigate some effects of tooth loss, the most substantial benefits were observed in individuals who maintained their natural teeth.

In a related study published in BMJ Medicine, the diversity of physical activities was found to be as crucial as the volume for longevity. Researchers analyzed data from over 110,000 participants in the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. The results indicated that individuals engaging in a broader range of physical activities, from walking and weightlifting to racquet sports and gardening, had a 19% lower risk of mortality from all causes, even after accounting for the total exercise volume.
