Governor of Sinaloa Faces US Investigation Over Alleged Cartel Ties

The governor of Sinaloa, Mexico, Rubén Rocha Moya, has announced a temporary leave from his position following accusations from the United States regarding his alleged involvement with drug trafficking activities linked to the Sinaloa cartel. This decision aims to facilitate the ongoing investigations led by the U.S. Department of Justice, which has requested his extradition. Rocha, a prominent figure in the ruling party and an ally of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, firmly denies the allegations, labeling them as “false” and “politically motivated.” He expressed his determination to prove his innocence through a statement on social media, describing the accusations as an attack on the Morena party.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that any actions taken will depend on the presentation of substantial evidence by the United States. She emphasized that if the allegations are proven with adequate evidence, the Mexican prosecution will act according to the law. However, she warned that without such proof, the accusations might be politically driven. Sheinbaum also highlighted the importance of maintaining national sovereignty and preventing foreign interference in Mexico’s internal affairs.
