A train derailment on São Paulo’s Line 9-Esmeralda, operated by ViaMobilidade, occurred late Sunday night near Berrini station, causing disruptions for commuters on Monday morning. The incident, which happened around 10:40 PM, involved a train car coming off the tracks in the direction of Osasco, necessitating single-track operations in the affected area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and passengers were safely evacuated with the assistance of security personnel.
In response to the derailment, the PAESE emergency plan was activated, deploying 40 buses to shuttle passengers between Granja Julieta and Pinheiros stations. Maintenance teams worked through the night, but the train cars remained on the tracks as stations opened, resulting in increased wait times and slower service.
This derailment is not an isolated incident for Line 9-Esmeralda. Since ViaMobilidade took over operations, there have been four derailments, including incidents on March 31, 2026, near Varginha station, and on November 17, 2023, near Santo Amaro station. Additionally, the company manages Line 8-Diamante, which has experienced six derailments under its administration.
The cause of the latest derailment is still under investigation. ViaMobilidade has stated that efforts are ongoing to restore normal service as quickly as possible.
