The GWM Ora 5 hybrid, recently introduced at the Beijing Auto Show, promises an impressive range of over 1,000 kilometers on a full tank. This compact SUV aims to surpass the fuel efficiency of Brazil’s top-selling hybrid, the Toyota Corolla Cross, by achieving 22 km/l.
Unveiled by GWM at the Beijing event, the Ora 5 marks the company’s first foray into hybrid vehicles. Although the total power output remains undisclosed, the vehicle features a combination of an electric motor and a 1.5 turbocharged combustion engine, similar to the setup in the Haval H6. In the Haval H6, this hybrid system delivers 243 horsepower and 55 kgfm of torque, using gasoline exclusively.
The Ora 5 boasts a remarkable autonomy of up to 1,100 kilometers per tank, with an urban fuel consumption rate of 22.2 km/l. Like its counterparts, the Toyota Corolla hybrid and Haval H6, the Ora 5 automatically manages the transition between electric and combustion engines and handles battery recharging.
With dimensions typical of an SUV, the Ora 5 measures 4.47 meters in length and has a wheelbase of 2.72 meters. It is slightly shorter than a Jeep Compass but offers a longer wheelbase than the Toyota Corolla Cross. In 2026, the Toyota Corolla Cross led hybrid sales in Brazil, with 5,950 units sold from January to March, according to the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE). The Ora 5 is positioned as 33% more fuel-efficient than the Corolla Cross, which records an urban consumption of 16.6 km/l. It also outperforms the Haval H6, the second-best-selling hybrid, which achieved 4,478 sales in the same period and has an urban consumption of 14.7 km/l, as per Inmetro data.
