Death of Iranian Intelligence Chief Escalates Tensions in the Middle East

Santa Catarina, the leading oyster producer in Brazil, is facing a severe crisis as climate change threatens to decimate 90% of its current oyster harvest. The rising sea temperatures have been identified as the primary cause of this unprecedented situation, impacting both producers and consumers.

Paulo Antônio Constantino, a seasoned oyster farmer with three decades of experience, is experiencing significant losses, estimated at R$ 1.5 million. He noted that his stock, which should be between 20,000 to 30,000 dozen oysters, has dwindled to less than 300 dozen. To mitigate losses, he has resorted to selling substandard oysters, which are not typically ready for market. This situation has also led to layoffs and reduced operations at his farm.

Other regions in southern Santa Catarina are facing similar challenges. Vinicius, a producer and head of a mariculture association, reported that much of their oyster production is being discarded during handling. The crisis coincides with high-demand periods such as Easter, further exacerbating the situation for consumers.

Research by Epagri has highlighted that unusually high sea temperatures in January and February are a major factor in the oyster mortality rate. In response, the industry is exploring alternatives like selling processed oysters, such as cooked and inspected meat, instead of raw oysters. The Federation of Aquaculture Companies is advocating for emergency measures and long-term policies, including increased access to credit. Although the state government has introduced an interest-free loan of up to R$ 50,000 per producer, industry representatives argue that this amount is insufficient given the scale of losses.
