Houthis Claim Missile Attack on Israel Amid Rising Tensions in Middle East

In a significant escalation, the Houthi rebels from Yemen have claimed responsibility for launching a missile attack on Israel, marking their first direct assault on the nation since the Middle Eastern conflict began. The Iranian-backed group has previously targeted over 100 merchant vessels in the Red Sea since 2023. The announcement was made by the Houthi military spokesperson, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, through the Al-Masirah TV channel, which is under their control.

The Israeli military reported successfully intercepting the missile aimed at its territory. This attack followed a vague statement from Saree on Friday, suggesting the Houthis’ intention to join the ongoing conflict that has already disrupted the region and impacted the global economy. According to Saree, the missiles targeted “sensitive Israeli military sites” in southern Israel.

The involvement of the Houthis in the conflict raises concerns about potential threats to maritime security in the Red Sea corridor. Between November 2023 and January 2025, the Houthis attacked over 100 merchant ships using missiles and drones, resulting in the sinking of two vessels and the deaths of four sailors.
