Explosões em depósitos de combustível em Teerã geram alerta de chuva ácida

Recent explosions at a fuel depot in Tehran have significantly darkened the city’s skies, prompting officials to issue warnings about potential acid rain. This incident followed a joint military operation by the United States and Israel targeting a local oil refinery. The resulting smoke and gases have the potential to interact with atmospheric moisture, leading to the formation of acidic compounds that could precipitate as rain.

The explosions released substantial amounts of soot and microscopic particles into the atmosphere, creating a dense cloud of pollution. These particles obstruct sunlight, causing a dramatic reduction in daylight and giving the impression of nighttime conditions. Authorities have advised residents to wear masks outdoors and limit exposure to the polluted air.

Acid rain results when pollutants like sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) react with water vapor in the air, forming acidic compounds. These gases are often emitted during the combustion of fossil fuels, particularly in industrial settings such as refineries and fuel depots. The chemical reactions produce sulfuric and nitric acids, which dissolve in cloud droplets and fall as acid rain.

Acid rain can have numerous environmental impacts, including damage to vegetation, alteration of soil chemistry, and harm to aquatic life. It can also accelerate the corrosion of metals and the deterioration of buildings and monuments. While acid rain is not typically harmful to human skin, the pollutants it carries can degrade air quality and pose health risks.
