There is international concern that this new council might undermine the United Nations’ authority. Trump, known for his criticism of multilateral organizations like the UN, questions their effectiveness and cost, suggesting they often do not align with U.S. interests.
According to a document obtained by Reuters, Trump will serve as the lifelong president of the council. Nations seeking a permanent seat must contribute $1 billion, with Trump managing these funds. Countries like Argentina, Hungary, and Morocco have already accepted the invitation, while Brazil is still considering its participation.
Oliver Stuenkel, a professor at the Fundação Getulio Vargas, criticizes the council’s structure, highlighting the concentration of power in Trump’s hands and the lack of transparency. Concerns are also raised about potential conflicts of interest, as Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and advisor Steve Witkoff, both with business interests in Gaza, are involved.
A senior UN official refrained from commenting directly on Trump’s plan but emphasized that the UN remains the only entity with the moral and legal authority to unite all nations. Annalena Baerbock, President of the UN General Assembly, warned against undermining this role, stating it could lead to “very dark times.”
