The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has expressed concerns that a potential U.S. military move against Greenland could significantly benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin. In an interview published on Sunday, Sánchez emphasized that such an action would weaken NATO and validate Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The European Union is set to hold an emergency meeting to address U.S. President Donald Trump’s push to acquire Greenland. Trump has threatened to impose a 10% tariff on eight European countries, increasing to 25% by June, unless an agreement is reached. The countries affected include Denmark, Norway, and Germany, among others.
Greenland holds a critical strategic position between the U.S. and Russia, making it a focal point for security in the Arctic. The U.S. already maintains a military base there, but recent tensions have led European nations to deploy troops to the island at Denmark’s request.
European leaders have criticized Trump’s tariff threats, warning of a “dangerous negative escalation” that could harm transatlantic relations. The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, and the EU Council President, António Costa, have both expressed their commitment to defending European sovereignty.
